  5. 5. Documentary Screening:
Mr. Shahriar Kabir- a noted Bangladeshi journalist, filmmaker, human rights activist and author of more than 70 books focusing on human rights, secularism, communalism, fundamentalism, and history of the Bangladesh war, was with us for the screening of an exquisite documentary titled 'Mithat’s Dream: Story of young Dervish of Konya' depicting mysticism of Sufism and philosophy of Jalaluddin Rumi. Rumi’s work is quite relevant in today’s world as we see many divides and the manifestation of extreme religious views instigated by mis-political interest.

On 28th August 2019, Seminar Workshop and Special Lectures Committee efficaciously organized the screening of a documentary titled ‘Mithat’s Dream: Story of a Young Dervish of Konya’ narrated by Mr. Shahriar Kabir, a human rights activist, writer and filmmaker from Bangladesh.

The screening of this documentary began with a short introduction by Mr Shahriar Kabir. He highlighted the urgent need to tackle terrorism across the world not by waging war or use of forces but through Rumi’s ideology of mystic Sufism which talks about about loving the humankind irrespective of cast, creed, race, and ethnicity.

Mr Kabir was convivially welcomed by Dr. Gautam who presented him with a bouquet and applauded him for his profound work in field of human rights and his ceaseless efforts in spreading the message of secular humanism, to make world a better place, through his documentaries.

The documentary was based on Mithat a young Dervish of Konya, the way he had carried on the traditional Sufism and particularly a whirling dance form called Sema which is performed every year on birth and death anniversary of Rumi.

It also tried to break the myth prevalent in western countries about Islam being propagator of terrorism and portrayed Sufi interpretation of Islam of peace and amity as a theological counter-narrative of extreme Wahabi-Salafi Islam. The documentary lasted for 35 minutes and stage was open for questions wherein students freely interacted with Mr Kabir and cleared themselves of the queries they had.

The screening event was successfully wrapped up following the vote of thanks by Mr Ahmad.
