The Chair on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, Lucknow, was established by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, in July 2024. The Chair is designed to address the evolving needs of the intellectual property landscape in India, fostering a deeper understanding and expertise in IPR matters.
The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) initially established a Central Scheme for Intellectual Property Education, Research, and Public Outreach (IPERPO), under which IPR Chairs were created. Subsequently, in 2016, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) within the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, introduced the Scheme for Pedagogy & Research in IPRs for Holistic Education & Academia (SPRIHA).
Under the leadership of Professor Manish Singh, Chair Professor of the DPIIT-IPR Chair at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, Lucknow, the Chair undertakes a wide range of initiatives. These include conducting research, offering comprehensive educational programs, hosting diverse events, and engaging in extensive outreach efforts, all designed to advance the field of intellectual property (IP).
This initiative aims to advance intellectual property education and research. The Chair primarily focuses on the intersection of intellectual property law with public policy and international IP matters relevant to India, and to enhance awareness among students, researchers, academics, and practitioners; the Chair will diligently organize a variety of events centered on intellectual property (IP) themes. Furthermore, it will undertake outreach activities, including a specialized visitor's program, to advance its mission of fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of IP. The Chair will provide comprehensive support to entrepreneurs and other stakeholders by offering expert assistance in preparing and filing patent applications and other intellectual property (IP) matters. Additionally, the Chair will offer strategic advice on IP management, helping clients understand and leverage their IP assets effectively to achieve their business objectives and foster innovation. This service is designed to ensure that all IP-related needs are met with the highest level of expertise and efficiency.
